ABSITE High-Yield Topics: Where the Marks Actually Are

18 June 2026 · 7 min read

The ABSITE rewards breadth, but not evenly. A handful of areas appear year after year and are worth over-preparing. If your time is limited, spend it here first.

Nutrition and metabolism

Know refeeding syndrome cold, the caloric and protein needs of the surgical patient, and the metabolic response to injury (ebb and flow phases). Nutrition questions are pure recall — they are among the cheapest marks on the exam once you have drilled them.

Fluids, electrolytes, and acid–base

  • Hyponatremia and hypernatremia management and their classic traps.
  • Potassium disturbances and their ECG signatures.
  • The anion-gap vs non-anion-gap acidosis framework — a reliable question generator.

Surgical oncology principles

Focus on staging logic, margins, and the indications for adjuvant therapy rather than memorising every regimen. Breast, colorectal, and melanoma decision-making recur most.

Trauma

ATLS priorities structure most trauma stems: the answer is usually the next step that addresses the most immediate threat to life. Master the algorithms for hemorrhagic shock, tension pneumothorax, and the FAST-positive unstable patient.

Wound healing and surgical infection

Phases of wound healing, factors that impair it, and the timeline of surgical-site infections are perennial. These are recall-heavy and ideal for flashcards.

How to drill them

Do topic-focused question blocks, not random sets, until your accuracy in each high-yield area is consistently above 75%. Then switch to mixed timed sets to build exam stamina. Convert every miss into a flashcard so the correction sticks.
